Words. Images. Information. Just for you.

Periodicals

Trade and consumer periodicals have been my mainstay since 1985 and continue to make up 70 percent of my work because editors value my area of expertise: I am an expert at finding and interviewing experts. My ability to gather information from leading experts is the constant. What varies is the list of topics. Succession planning for family-held businesses. Phytoremediation (cleaning up toxic waste with plants). How to sharpen knives. E85 and MTBE (both related to gasoline). Whatever the subject, there’s a host of SMEs (subject matter experts) eager to share their insights and the science supporting those insights. I find these experts, extract information, reassemble it and deliver an end product that provides great value to readers. My relationship with these publications can be cast into two categories, push and pull.

Push

I pair up innovative article ideas with publications. I use those publications’ websites, editorial calendars, blogs and other resources to make my matches. While I always have the concept fully developed before submitting my presentation, I also work with clients to tailor the topic to their exact needs.

Pull

Publications often find me. They’ve seen my work somewhere or a colleague mentioned my name or I turned up in their Google search. Someone on the editorial staff gets in touch with an idea or a question and that’s the start of a beautiful relationship.

Summary of experience

Work history: I started free lancing part time in 1985 and went full time in 1991. I founded Big Ring Media Team, Incorporated in March, 1999; the corporation was renamed R Ries Corporation in 2016. I occasionally accept other positions; right now I’m teaching adult basic education two days a week. Community: I have performed tens of thousands of hours of volunteer work. I started in the late ‘60s with Youth Emergency Services, a phone-in crisis intervention center in the Cedar-Riverside/West Bank district of Minneapolis. I am currently helping with the construction of mountain bike trails in Versailles State Park located in Versailles, Indiana. Education: B.A. in English from Indiana University Southeast, 1991. If you want more details, I’d be happy to provide them. Just let me know.
